Founded in 1942, the Catherine McAuley High School in East Flatbush was once a convent whose rooms, over time, were left empty. Today, as a model in-city boarding program, the rooms are full again with young women gaining an "education for life."

Philanthropy Grows in Brooklyn: The Brooklyn Community Foundation History
Our story is one of independence, of reinvention, of diversity and of discovery. Our story is one of Brooklyn.
In 1998, the Independence Community Bank created the Independence Community Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to serving low and moderate income residents in the neighborhoods in which the bank existed. The Foundation maintained a particular emphasis on Brooklyn, the Bank's home borough since 1850.
the Foundation's work with the Brooklyn nonprofit community has grown and deepened. Its leaders and staff observed an acute and growing need-- particularly during difficult economic times -- to focus more resources more intensively on the host of issues facing the network of Brooklyn organizations with which the Foundation works.
