On the Passing of Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson
Brooklyn Community Foundation mourns the passing of Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson, the first African American to hold the position, who has served our borough since January 2014. DA Thompson was a strong and effective leader for fairness and justice in Brooklyn, particularly concerning the impacts of the criminal justice system on the lives of young people of color in our borough.
Among his many transformational initiatives, he instituted a groundbreaking policy not to prosecute low level marijuana possession arrests, in order to keep young people out of the justice system; he enabled Brooklynites with open summonses to have the opportunity to “Begin Again”; and he established a Conviction Review Unit that led to more than 20 exonerations.
Our thoughts are with DA Thompson’s family, friends, and colleagues, as they focus on continuing his legacy and commitment to justice in Brooklyn.
