The lobby of the Red Hook Initiative Center teems with energy on a sunny afternoon in early September. It is the first day of school. A huddle of girls discusses the day as each fills out a time sheet, putting her name beside the title of health educator.

Anne Pope

Sustainable Flatbush Founder/Director Anne Pope organized two community events in 2006, an energy efficiency seminar and a film screening, both held at Vox Pop Cafe/Bookstore. The interest and enthusiasm generated by these events and the topic of sustainability inspired her to hold a neighborhood town hall meeting at Vox Pop in March of 2007 and officially launch Sustainable Flatbush. She also created an online presence with the Sustainable Flatbush blog, which sparked dialogue with readers all over the world.
Since then Sustainable Flatbush has started a community garden (and is in the process of starting a second one), organized central Brooklyn's first ever electronics recycling event, held film screenings, swap meets, a variety of workshops (ranging from sprouting and gardening to making flowers and pots out of recycled materials), street tours, potlucks and energy solution conferences and outreach.
The mission of Sustainable Flatbush (SF), a newly formed grassroots non-profit organization, is to organize neighborhood residents around innovative energy practices, urban gardening and agriculture, waste reduction, and prioritizing streets and public spaces for people instead of automobiles. SF's vision of a sustainable neighborhood includes energy efficient homes, businesses and apartment buildings and local implementation of renewable energy such as solar; plentiful public open spaces for residents to enjoy the outdoors and interact with their neighbors; utilization of gardens, yards and rooftops for growing healthy food; minimal waste achieved by implementing reuse networks for sharing of resources, neighborhood and household composting systems, and full recycling compliance at all buildings, schools and businesses; and a supportive environment and infrastructure for healthy, affordable, nonpolluting transportation options such as walking, biking, and public transit.
