Chinita Pointer
Chinita Pointer is a passionate do-gooder! She's quiet in her methods but her actions are loud - making a difference using music in our youth.
About This Do Gooder:

Ms. Pointer should receive recognition for her unwavering belief that all children are equal-no matter where they're from! For 15+ years, she has made a difference in the Central Brooklyn region by providing students with music education and connecting them to higher education. She assisted parents in recognizing that expectations has to be raised with their children in order to succeed; that it is their duty to provide every opportunity to nurture their inner genius. As the Executive Director of The Noel Pointer Foundation, Chinita has provided countless scholarships for her students, mentoring them through college; and, helping underserved communities to create community where it didn't exist by connecting residents to resources and establishing a mentoring system for their young. Ms. Pointer is ever humble and hates recognition. After working with her for more than a year, I truly believe she deserves the title of BCF's "Do Gooder."

Community Impact:

Central Brooklyn has some of the nation's highest unemployment rate and lowest graduating percentages in high schools. Educating its youth is a true challenge where opportunities to the Arts are few and finding dedicated mentors are rare. Ms. Pointer's work has provided students with not only music enrichment, but also a place for high aspiring minority students to hone their craft. Most importantly, these students are surrounded with positive role models and reinforcement that education is their ticket "out." Her work has touched more than 9,000 students and her devotion is paying off: her first graduating class (from PS 44) is going off to college using their string instruments, some even to elite colleges such as Brandeis and Harvard University.
