About the Brooklyn Community Garden Fund:
The Brooklyn Community Garden Fund is a partnership between Brooklyn Community Foundation and Green Guerillas, New York City’s pioneering community garden organization, to make hard-to-get funding available to Brooklyn’s GreenThumb community garden groups. The overwhelming majority of Brooklyn’s community garden groups are not 501c3 organizations who can access funding from foundations or elected officials. They must often fund activities through membership dues or small fundraisers. This fund will allow gardeners to make vital garden improvements and und
ertake important community-building activities. With more people than ever entering community gardens to seek food, education, and volunteer opportunities, this fund arrives at a very opportune time for Brooklyn’s community gardening movement.
Applications must be postmarked by May 2, 2011.
Who is eligible to receive funding?
If your group manages a registered GreenThumb community garden in Brooklyn, has no full time staff, and has an operating budget of less than $10,000, you are eligible to apply for funding. Community garden groups that have already received a grant of any size from BCF in the current calendar year are not eligible for this program.
What activities are eligible to receive funding?
Grants will support:
- Activities that make physical improvements to community gardens
- Community outreach and education activities that get people involved in community gardening, urban agriculture, and community-garden based neighborhood improvement activities.
- supplies and materials to improve community gardens: seeds, plants, soil, tools, lumber, compost bins
