At the Brooklyn Community Foundation, we believe Brooklyn's strength is in its people. So we asked a few of our neighbors to share what they're thankful for in their communities and what they hope for in the coming year. Working together, we will make the Brooklyn we love even better.
I was nominated for the Peter Jay Sharp Fellowship by my program, Girls Write Now. I'd heard of the fellowship before but I never thought I would even be nominated, so imagine how I felt when I learned that I was chosen for it. This is basically how I became a part of the Brooklyn Community Foundation family.
I am thankful for the multiple inspirations within my community of East New York. I find an unspoken story within each person I come across. I tend to tell many of their stories, as well as my own, through poetry, because when you speak for one, you may be speaking for many.
Within the coming year, I just hope for youth like myself to follow their dreams and not to become yet another statistic or a victim to the streets. I hope more teens can receive opportunities like this because you’ll be surprised what talents may lay deep into an area that is constantly overlooked.
