Remember Brooklyn on Giving Tuesday

December 2, 2014

“We want your support, but more importantly,
we want your hearts. This is heart work.
We absolutely can spark the change Brooklyn
has called for if we walk together
and pursue justice with joy.”

- Reverend Emma Jordan-Simpson, BCF Board Member

Dear Friend:

Today is a day for giving globally, but sometimes the needs in our very own community can go unnoticed.

While Brooklyn has rightfully gained international recognition as a hub of creativity, enterprise, and innovation, across the borough a less visible, more profound reality exists for many of our neighbors:

  • Nearly 40% of Brooklyn families live below or near the poverty line
  • Kings County has the nation’s 5th largest population of children in poverty
  • Brooklyn ranks 3rd among major U.S. counties for income inequality

In 2014, to better understand these challenges and offer some solutions, Brooklyn Community Foundation launched Brooklyn Insights. Nearly 1,000 Brooklyn residents and local leaders helped us reimagine the Foundation’s role in the community.

Our new Community Fund action plan—anchored by three core initiatives that focus on youth, neighborhoods, and exemplary local nonprofits—is designed to take on Brooklyn’s challenges while celebrating its strength and resources.

We cannot do this important work without partners like you. If you share our vision for a fair and just Brooklyn, please make a gift to our Community Fund today.

As the first and only public foundation 100% dedicated to the borough’s charitable community, Brooklyn Community Foundation is uniquely positioned to leverage your gift into high-impact grants for hundreds of Brooklyn nonprofits, both large and small.

We hope you will join us in this “heart work” and help make this new action plan a success for our communities, our neighbors, and our future.

Thank you for your generosity and your commitment to Brooklyn.

Sincerely,
