Spread Joy in Brooklyn

December 23, 2014

“My job is working in our family store. But my mind and my heart and my soul are dedicated to helping other people. That’s giving me more joy.”

- Misba Abdin, Brooklyn Insights Participant

East Brooklyn, bordering Queens, is increasingly home to new Americans. More than 75,000 residents of the neighborhoods of Cypress Hills, City Line, and East New York were born in another country.

They’re here to work, raise their children, and find opportunity. But for many, their first challenge is finding help.

Misba Abdin has lived in East New York for nearly 30 years, achieving great success running a chain of grocery stores with his family. But, as he began to see thousands of immigrants from his native Bangladesh moving to Brooklyn, it was evident he needed to do more for his community.

“When they come to America, first they have a problem with the language barrier. Second, there’s no resource center where they can find information. They don’t know where to go.”
