Angeline Thérèse DeFiore (“Terry”), a real Brooklyn kid, was born on January 15, 1949 in a hospital on Washington Avenue not far from the Brooklyn Museum and grew up at East 40th and Avenue D. She used to say that she went four blocks to the right to grade school, four blocks to the left to high school and 15 blocks to college – Brooklyn College, of course! Other than to travel, she left Brooklyn for only three years to live with her family when they moved to Mt. Sinai on Long Island. As soon as she could, she moved back to Brooklyn.
Terry had a learning disability that was never diagnosed. Not only did she finish college with a degree in psychology, but she broke glass ceilings all over the place. She was a girl playing basketball with the guys at Farragut Park. She was one of the top female referees of women’s high school and college basketball. She was the second woman code inspector hired at the NYC housing agency Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) – they “gave the girl the Village where she would be safe!” She rose to be Deputy Chief Inspector of Manhattan Code Enforcement before she moved to HPD’s Division of Alternative Management Programs (DAMP). At DAMP, when she realized she had to fight to get the job of Director of TIL Tech over men who had been there longer and might have had more years on the job, she did – and won. After she left HPD, she consulted as a construction manager for several years, certainly not a traditional job for a woman. And finally, she used the Site Safety Manager license that she had gotten in the early ‘90’s, another non-traditional job for a woman – keeping construction job sites safe for workers and the general public by ensuring that construction was done following the rules and regulations of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
