Starting May 1, buying local and giving local will multiply in a big way on Smith Street.

By Brooklyn—the only shop exclusively selling fine goods made in Brooklyn—is partnering with the Brooklyn Community Foundation to incentivize shoppers to make their purchases matter more by adding a donation to the Foundation’s Brooklyn Now Fund in support of Brooklyn charities this spring.
Through June 15, for every dollar customers’ donate in store and online at bybrooklyn.com, By Brooklyn and Brooklyn Community Foundation will match it, tripling the total amount raised. By Brooklyn will also contribute a portion of proceeds from its Mother’s Day gift baskets to the fund.
“We are thrilled to partner with our customers and the Brooklyn Community Foundation to boost local makers and local do gooders,” said By Brooklyn owner Gaia DiLoreto. “Everything we do is all about Brooklyn. This is a fantastic way for our shoppers on Smith Street and around the world to support vital Brooklyn nonprofits along with their favorite Brooklyn artisans.”
“Thanks in advance to everyone who gives generously at By Brooklyn this spring!” added Brooklyn Community Foundation President and CEO Cecilia Clarke. “By Brooklyn truly understands the importance of supporting local communities, and the critical work of nonprofits across Brooklyn. We hope everyone who loves Brooklyn will grab this opportunity to shop local and give local!”
The Brooklyn Now Fund is directed by Brooklyn Community Foundation’s young professionals committee, which was established in 2013 to offer 20- and 30-somethings in Brooklyn an opportunity to gain deeper involvement in the work of the Foundation. Members contribute and raise funds, which are distributed annually through grants to Brooklyn nonprofits.
“We hope more young professionals get involved with local philanthropy and the issues facing Brooklyn today,” said Brooklyn Now Co-Chair, Sasha Baumrind, a lifelong Brooklyn resident and real estate professional. “Brooklyn is a great place to have grown up and a great place to live, thanks to people like Gaia and institutions like the Brooklyn Community Foundation. I want to make sure it stays that way for years to come.”
