From Bay Ridge to the Border: Help Us Stand Up for Immigrant Rights
The heart wrenching reports of parents being separated from their children at the border are being echoed right here in Brooklyn.
Earlier this week, while trying to deliver a pizza to the Fort Hamilton Army Base in Bay Ridge, Pablo Villavicencio-Calderon was detained by military police and now faces separation from his wife and daughters after his municipal ID NYC triggered security guards to run a background check revealing an outstanding deportation order.
This is why our Immigrant Rights Fund is so necessary.
We are able to act swiftly to support deeply needed local programs like Legal Aid Society's Immigrant Family Unity Project, which is representing Pablo--as well as New York Immigration Coalition and Make the Road New York, which, among many others, are advocating in Albany for drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants for this very reason.
To date, we are pleased to report that our Immigrant Rights Fund has raised close to our original goal of $1 million, and the Foundation has already made nearly $600,000 in grants to 40 immigrant serving groups across the borough.
Because of stories like Pablo's, we know this crisis is not slowing down, so we have doubled our commitment and now seek to raise $2 million by 2020.
