Celebrating Black Philanthropy Month with Shelley Stewart III

Brooklyn Community Foundation is thrilled to celebrate Black Philanthropy Month, this year with the theme of “Fierce Urgency of Now: From Dream to Action”! Throughout August we're highlighting leaders within our own organization—and we encourage you to follow the hashtag #bpm2022 on social media and pledge your support for Black-led nonprofits across Brooklyn!

Our Board Member Shelley Stewart III, Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, shared with us his thoughts on the meaning of philanthropy and its potential to support our communities:

"Philanthropy is society’s realization that the ‘market’ is an insufficient mechanism for allocating capital to places & people that need it most. Philanthropy is a necessary enabler if we are to collectively unlock all human potential.”
