The finalists were chosen by the 34-person Spark Prize Committee from a highly competitive applicant pool of grassroots and city-wide organizations. Next, the Committee will conduct interviews with finalist organizations, and then select five winners to each receive the $100,000 “no strings attached” award in January 2023. The Spark Breakfast, a celebration of the winners and finalists, will take place on March 14, 2023, at the Brooklyn Museum.
Now in its sixth year, the $100,000 Spark Prize has awarded a total of $3 million since its launch to nonprofit organizations that have sparked change for a fair and just Brooklyn.
Finalists and winners are chosen based upon their embodiment of the Prize’s four criteria: commitment to equity and racial justice, track record of impact in Brooklyn, strong institutional values, and a dynamic vision for the future of their organization. To be eligible, organizations must have a minimum annual budget of $250,000 and have been in operation for at least five years. Of the 20 finalist organizations, 85% are led by people of color; 63% are led by women, trans, or gender nonconforming individuals; and 40% have annual operating budgets under $2 million.
Each of the 20 finalists will also receive a $5,000 donation match from the Foundation during its #BrooklynGives on Giving Tuesday campaign. Launching November 8 and culminating on Giving Tuesday, November 29, #BrooklynGives encourages Brooklynites to give where they live on the year’s biggest day of giving.
