#JustPay: An Urgent Call to Support NYC's Nonprofit Community
Brooklyn Community Foundation is endorsing Human Services Council’s #JustPay campaign on Thursday, May 25th to urge Mayor Adams to include a cost-of-living adjustment for human services workers in his Executive Budget and to finally fix the city’s continued delay in registering and paying nonprofit contracts.
As a part of the #JustPay campaign, Thursday, March 25th will be “A Day Without Human Services,” during which human services providers will strive to close at least 30% of their services for the day, while maintaining the safety of the people they serve. The intent is to demonstrate to the Mayor what would happen if the human services sector were no longer able to provide critical services to their communities.
Unfortunately, this is not just a theoretical scenario. We know that our grantee partners across Brooklyn, as well as nonprofits citywide, are facing closures and reducing services and staff because they have not received payments for city contracted services.
If closing services for a day is not an option, there are other ways to participate.
Equitable pay for nonprofit workers is critical to addressing the gendered and racialized pay and wealth gap we are working so hard to fix in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Community Foundation remains committed to advocating for the city to fix the payment backlog and improve its deeply flawed nonprofit contracting process.
We hope you will join us in this important effort.
