Program Officer

Position Overview:

To further Brooklyn Org’s strategic priorities, the Program Officer (PO) develops relationships and works closely with community residents, nonprofit leaders, and other external partners. The PO is responsible for managing grantmaking portfolios with a participatory grantmaking approach and maintaining the integrity of grant information.

The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and analytical skills, a clear commitment to racial justice, in-depth knowledge of the Brooklyn nonprofit sector, a learning orientation and humility, and will be a team player capable of putting the common good first.

This is a full-time exempt position, and reports to the Director of Programs and is a member of the Programs Team, which also includes Brooklyn Org’s Capacity Building Program, led by the VP of Programs. It is located in Brooklyn, NY and will require some early morning, evening, and weekend work.  There is a need to travel within NYC via public transportation for visits with community partners.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following as needed to meet the goals and objectives:

Grantmaking and Programs

  • Manage assigned grantmaking processes, including recruiting and launching community advisory councils, preparing Requests for Proposals, proposal review, due diligence, site visits, grant recommendations, monitoring grantee progress and outcomes. Topic areas for portfolios may change and/or expand due to discrete initiatives and internal collaboration.
  • Prepare docket materials that summarize recommendations for consideration by the Board of Directors and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Support additional grantmaking programs through new partnerships and funding, as opportunities arise.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to share information and key learnings
  • Conduct field scan research, convenings, and interviews.
  • Actively participate and represent Brooklyn Org in learning and philanthropic spaces.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with grantee partners; fielding questions and conducting inquiry calls with prospective grantees.

Grant Operations

  • Work closely with Programs support staff and Operations team to facilitate processing of grants.
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the grants management platform and additional databases/file systems to meet legal, auditing, and foundation requirements.
  • Work externally with applicants and grantees, and internally with Programs and Operations teams to ensure compliance with regulations and meet deliverable expectations for assigned grants.

Programs

  • Lead grantee convenings for their respective grant dockets, with the support of the Programs Team.
  • Partner with the Programs Team to support Brooklyn Org initiatives.
  • Help organize workshops and convenings, develop agenda, identify speakers, and manage logistics.

Collaborations

  • Collaborate with Programs Team to inform and implement Brooklyn Org’s Capacity Building program, including working with consultants.
  • Collaborate with Communications to increase the visibility of the grantees, the needs of the Brooklyn nonprofit sector, and community-led solutions.
  • Support Development in fundraising efforts, providing information and attending events.
  • Participate as an active member in organization-wide activities.

Abilities and Competencies 

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills: especially the ability to listen well, establish and maintain authentic and professional relationships, and exercise effective and inclusive leadership in cross-cultural and multi-cultural settings.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills: using sound judgment, able to quickly gather, synthesize and summarize information in a clear and jargon-free manner in written and oral communications. Bilingualism or multilingualism is a plus.
  • Strong presentation skills: comfortable making presentations to public audiences and skilled in both group and one-on-one meeting facilitation.
  • Intellectual curiosity and learning orientation: commitment to continuously learning and growing, remaining humble and ego-free in the work, striving to minimize power dynamics,

Qualifications:
  • At least 4-7 years of experience in philanthropy, nonprofit, or public policy. Previous Program Officer experience preferred.
  • Strong planning, administrative, and organizational skills: ability to manage multiple tasks and timetables while maintaining focus, meet deadlines, and work independently with minimal support.
  • Direct work experience and strong familiarity with organizations that fit Brooklyn Org’s funding priorities; especially with community organizing and advocacy in Brooklyn.
  • Deep commitment to racial equity, especially as it applies to Brooklyn communities. Passion for Brooklyn communities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Brooklyn Org’s vision and values, specifically a passion for racial and social justice.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Preference for previous professional experience with New York City-based nonprofits.
Additional Information

Currently full-time employees are expected to work in the BKO office located in Downtown Brooklyn Monday through Thursday with occasional events on Friday.

Position Overview:

Brooklyn Org seeks a visionary and results-driven Chief Impact & Growth Officer (CIGO) to help shape and scale the organization’s long-term impact across Brooklyn.

The CIGO will oversee organizational innovation and programmatic impact, working closely with the President and Senior Leadership Team to expand Brooklyn Org’s philanthropic reach and strengthen community outcomes across the borough.

The role blends strategy, asset development, ecosystem leadership, community impact and program oversight into a unified roadmap.  The CIGO will ensure Brooklyn Org is positioned as a cutting edge, well-funded and highly effective central hub and partner for philanthropy and collaborative investment in Brooklyn.

This executive leader will also oversee Brooklyn Org’s Programs Department, including management of the Vice President of Programs. Working collaboratively across departments, the CIGO will develop and deliver on Brooklyn Org’s core strategic objectives, create and implement large-scale philanthropic partnerships, and identify new opportunities for innovation and impact.

Key Responsibilities: 

Organizational Strategy, Programs & Vision

Lead the development and execution of Brooklyn Org’s long-term strategic direction while ensuring alignment between strategy and programmatic impact.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the Programs Department, including supervision and leadership of the Vice President of Programs.
  • Ensure Brooklyn Org’s grantmaking, initiatives and community investments align with the organization’s strategic priorities.
  • Identify emerging community trends and pivot points for the organization, including philanthropic opportunities and innovative funding models.
  • Analyze trends in Brooklyn’s nonprofit ecosystem, philanthropy, and public policy.
  • Advise the President and leadership team on strategic opportunities and risks.
  • Align program, fundraising, and communications strategies to maximize impact.
  • Identify areas of program growth, innovation, and initiative redesign.

Examples of strategic leadership might include:

  • Identifying emerging issues in Brooklyn such as housing stability, immigrant support, economic mobility, or climate resilience.
  • Developing new collaborative funding initiatives or philanthropic partnerships focused on these priorities.
  • Identify and execute new programming initiatives that support growth and identified trends

Strategic Partnerships & Philanthropic Growth

Identify, build and expand high-impact partnerships that grow philanthropic resources and deepen Brooklyn Org’s role as a borough-wide philanthropic leader, in partnership with the Chief Development Officer and VP of Programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Position Brooklyn as a national priority focus region for philanthropic and community investment, and Brooklyn Org as a model partner.
  • Drive the growth of total Assets Under Management by working with the Chief Development Officer to identify new donor segments and innovative fund types
  • Identify and cultivate partnerships with foundations, donor advised funds, corporate philanthropy, government agencies, and institutional leaders.
  • Structure collaborative funding initiatives that bring multiple partners together around shared community priorities.
  • Expand relationships with anchor Brooklyn businesses and institutions, such as hospitals and universities.
  • Support the development of new revenue streams and partnership-based funding opportunities.

Innovation & Strategic Initiatives

Incubate and launch new initiatives that expand Brooklyn Org’s impact and philanthropic leadership.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify and develop new programs, initiatives, and funding vehicles aligned with Brooklyn Org’s mission.
  • Lead cross-departmental efforts to design and launch strategic initiatives.
  • Evaluate potential models that will expand community investment and philanthropic engagement.

Potential initiatives might include:

  • A Brooklyn Impact Investment Fund
  • Community wealth-building initiatives
  • Neighborhood-based giving circles
  • A data and insights platform for Brooklyn nonprofits

Strategy Execution & Performance Tracking

Ensure the successful implementation and positive impact of strategic priorities across the organization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Chief of Staff to drive execution of the President’s strategic vision across teams.
  • Develop key performance metrics and data frameworks to measure strategic outcomes.
  • Monitor progress on strategic initiatives and ensure accountability across departments.
  • Present strategic updates, policy insights, and initiative progress to executive leadership and the Board.

Location:

Compensation:
  • The salary range for this position is $200,000 – $220,000 and is dependent on the successful candidate’s relevant experience.

The Position:

Brooklyn Org seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurial Vice President, Philanthropic Business Development to help drive the next chapter of growth for Brooklyn philanthropy.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Vice President, Philanthropic Business Development will lead Brooklyn Org’s efforts to grow donor-advised funds (DAFs) and deepen philanthropic engagement across Brooklyn and beyond. This highly external-facing role is responsible for identifying, cultivating, and securing new relationships with high-net-worth individuals, family offices, corporate leaders, and professional advisors.

The Vice President will serve as a key driver of Brooklyn Org’s growth strategy, proactively developing prospect pipelines, originating new business opportunities, and converting philanthropic interest into new donor-advised funds and long-term philanthropic partnerships.

This role is ideal for a bold, entrepreneurial relationship-builder who thrives on opening doors, building relationships from scratch, independently generating new opportunities, and converting relationships into meaningful philanthropic investment. The successful candidate will understand the motivations and philanthropic priorities that drive charitable decision-making and be comfortable engaging donors, professional advisors, and philanthropic stakeholders in conversations around charitable giving and community impact. They will bring credibility in both philanthropic and community spaces, with the ability to connect donors to the people and organizations shaping Brooklyn’s future.

The Vice President will be measured on growth outcomes, including new donor-advised funds, philanthropic pipeline development, and fundholder retention. This role requires someone who can both originate new business and steward relationships with sophistication and care.

The ideal candidate combines entrepreneurial drive, strategic relationship management skills, and a genuine commitment to Brooklyn and community impact.

Specific Responsibilities:

Business Development & New DAF Acquisition

  • Proactively identify, cultivate, and secure new DAF holders and philanthropic partners, including high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), family offices, corporate partners, and professional advisors.
  • Build and maintain a robust, forward-looking prospect pipeline, prioritizing opportunities with the greatest growth potential.
  • Personally originate, engage, and advance new philanthropic relationships through strategic outreach, networking, referrals, and relationship cultivation.
  • Serve as a lead ambassador for Brooklyn Org’s donor-advised fund platform, effectively communicating the organization’s mission, philanthropic offerings, and community impact.

Fundholder Stewardship & Retention

  • Partner with the Donor Services team to ensure a seamless, high-touch onboarding experience for new fundholders.

  • Conduct annual strategy reviews for fundholders to refine their philanthropic goals and deepen their connection to Brooklyn’s communities and nonprofits.

Team Leadership & Data Management

  • Work closely with and have dotted line responsibility for the Donor Services Manager and the Grants & Compliance Manager to help ensure a seamless, coordinated, and high-quality fundholder experience.
  • Ensure accurate, secure, and compliant data management practices for all donor records, fundholder information, and relationship activity.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to enhance systems and processes that optimize donor engagement, compliance, and relationship management.
  • Stay informed on emerging trends and developments related to donor-advised funds, charitable planning, and philanthropy in order to effectively engage donors and professional advisors.
  • Participate in organizational events and community-facing initiatives as needed.

Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of demonstrated success in business development, philanthropic advising, strategic partnerships, fundraising, wealth management, or related relationship-driven fields.
  • Proven ability to prospect, pitch, and close high-value relationships with high-net-worth individuals, corporate clients, institutional partners, or philanthropic stakeholders.
  • Experience working with donor-advised funds, charitable giving strategies, planned giving vehicles, or philanthropic tax structures — or the demonstrated ability to master this knowledge quickly.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with professional advisors, including estate planners, wealth managers, tax attorneys, and financial planners.
  • Genuine commitment to community impact and Brooklyn’s nonprofit ecosystem — candidates should be motivated by both mission and measurable growth.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; backgrounds in business, finance, law, philanthropy, nonprofit management or related fields are welcomed.

Strongly Preferred:

  • Background in community foundations, philanthropic advising, or financial services with a nonprofit or mission-driven focus.
  • Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP®) or Certified Trust and Fiduciary Advisor (CTFA).
  • Existing relationships with wealth management professionals or family office advisors in the New York metro area.
  • Experience managing and mentoring staff.

A. Strategic Planning & Messaging

  • Refine and evolve Brooklyn Org’s messaging, storylines, and media narratives
  • Identify opportunities to position Brooklyn Org as a leader in community-led philanthropy
  • Develop and maintain a proactive media calendar aligned with organizational priorities

B. Executive Positioning & Thought Leadership

  • Develop and place thought leadership content (op-eds, bylines, letters to the editor)
  • Secure high-profile speaking opportunities (national conferences, panels, convenings)
  • Pitch and secure leadership profiles and interviews
  • Identify and pursue awards and recognitions for Brooklyn Org leadership

C. Media Relations & Press Outreach

  • Identify, develop, and pitch compelling press stories (including those featuring grantees and partners)
  • Manage media relationships and outreach pipelines
  • Coordinate and manage all interview logistics
  • Plan and execute press conferences and media briefings, including full on-site coordination

Brooklyn Org expects proposers to commit to clear, measurable outcomes. At minimum, proposals should address:

Media Placement Expectations

  • Minimum 3–5 media placements per month, with at least:
    • 1 national or top-tier outlet placement per quarter
  • Minimum 40–60 placements annually, across a mix of:
    • National outlets
    • NYC/Brooklyn media
    • Sector/trade publications

Proposers should:

  • Define how they categorize “top-tier” vs. “regional” placements
  • Outline how they will ensure consistency and quality of coverage

Strategic Outcomes

  • Increased visibility of Brooklyn Org’s new model of local philanthropy

ENGAGEMENT EXPECTATIONS

The selected consultant will:

  • Maintain a proactive, high-touch partnership
  • Attend weekly virtual meetings
  • Attend quarterly in-person meetings in Brooklyn
  • Be physically present for major events, press conferences, and key announcements
  • Provide timely and responsive support for media opportunities

  • Required Work Sample: A sample media pitch (1–2 paragraphs) specific to Brooklyn Org, demonstrating understanding of Brooklyn Org’s mission and positioning and ability to craft a compelling, newsworthy story angle

Prior engagements have operated on a retainer model.  Proposers should submit a detailed fee including:

  • Monthly retainer
  • Estimated hours and staffing model
  • Additional costs (if any)

PERFORMANCE REVIEW & ACCOUNTABILITY

Brooklyn Org will conduct a formal 90-day performance review to assess:

  • Progress toward media placement targets
  • Quality and relevance of coverage
  • Responsiveness and collaboration
  • Strategic alignment with Brooklyn Org priorities

Brooklyn Org reserves the right to:

  • Adjust scope or expectations based on performance
  • Terminate the engagement if minimum expectations are not met
