Featured Speakers

Joy-Ann Reid (Host) is a political analyst at MSNBC and host of “AM Joy.” She is the author of Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide and the co-editor of We Are the Change We Seek: The Speeches of Barack Obama. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, New York Magazine, among others. Joy is a former Knight Journalism Fellow (2003) and has taught at Syracuse’s Newhouse School of Communication. She graduated from Harvard with a concentration in film in 1991.

Yazmin Abdullah is a senior at the Business of Sports School. In addition to Sadie Nash, she has participated in Big Brother Big Sister, Morgan Stanley, Coro Youth Leadership Academy, Borough Student Advisory Council, and Chancellor’s Student Advisory Council. Yazmin founded Melanin Publications, Inc. to write books for young black girls by a young black girl. She hopes to further her interest in business by attending college to major in that field.

Chitra Aiyar is Executive Director of Sadie Nash Leadership Project, a feminist social justice youth leadership program that empowers low-income young women to be agents of change. Prior to joining Sadie Nash, Chitra was Senior Staff Attorney at African Services Committee. She has taught in high schools, women’s prisons, and as an adjunct professor at several local colleges. Chitra is a graduate of UC Berkeley and NYU Law, and she was a Fulbright Scholar in Bangladesh.
 
Megan Jean Louis is a junior at the Macaulay Honors College. She is an alumna of Girls for Gender Equity’s Young Women’s Advisory Council. Last summer, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation selected Megan for their Emerging Leaders Program. Megan’s commitment to equitable healthcare has translated to her current work at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, an internship with the Palliative Care Unit, and self-directed research.
 
Joanne N. Smith is the founding President and CEO of Girls for Gender Equity (GGE), an organization committed to mobilizing communities to invest in girls and women of color. Joanne co-authored a book on sexual harassment, was featured on the Summer 2016 cover of YES! Magazine, received the Ms. Foundation 2018 Gloria Award as a Woman of Vision, and co-chaired the nation’s first Young Women’s Initiative, which raised $30 million for cis, trans, and gender non-conforming youth in NYC.
